SUPERVISING AND SUPPORTING PRINCIPALS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR STUDENTS:  A WORKSHOP FOR SUPERVISORS OF PRINCIPALS

When:              Oct 23 and 24, 2008,  8:30 am – 3:30 pm

Where:             National-Louis University   -  Lisle Campus

Cost:                Individual     $200     Team of Three-Five    $500

Why:  Principals are second only to teachers in their impact upon student achievement.  Despite this fact, K-12 school systems typically do a woefully inadequate job of supervising and supporting principals.  The individuals charged with hiring, supervising, supporting and evaluating principals receive little or no preparation for these vital functions, and often work in isolation.  As school districts strive to become learning organizations that build human capacity, supervisors of principals are a neglected yet critically important cohort.

Background:  CEC has a partnership with the Wallace Foundation, through Illinois SAELP; to assist our member districts improve their appraisal systems for leaders.  In addition, CEC partners with the New Teacher Center at the University of California, Santa Cruz in coaching new principals.  The School Leadership Development Division of the University of California Santa Cruz has worked extensively with school districts across the country to help them to build effective standards-based principal supervision models, and to build coaching-based supervision cultures that increase principal effectiveness.  With support from the Stupski Foundation the NTC is now able to offer a two-day training for supervisors of principals.  Gary Bloom, Associate Director of the NTC at UCSC will facilitate the training.

Goal:  Build capacity of principal supervisors to nurture the growth of effective site leaders through Blended Coaching in formal and informal supervision and evaluation processes situated in aligned district systems.

Outcomes:

  • Examine personal practice
  • Understand an effective and systemic supervision and evaluation model
  • Practice supervisory behaviors using Blended Coaching
  • Engage in an inquiry process through participation in a professional learning community
  • Acquire practical tools and processes for effective supervision and evaluation
  • Examine real situations while developing appropriate responses
  • Leave with a follow-up plan focused on a case study principal.

More Details:  This two-day session is a highly-interactive workshop in which participants are asked to respond to video scenarios, engage in role-plays, self assessments, and share personal principal supervision dilemmas and case studies.  Participants are also asked to share their own district principal evaluation documents and processes.
